What do you do when you've got to have that all-important audition outfit or concert gown, and your bank account has never been tighter?  What about general every-day clothes to help you look your best for rehearsals or interviews?

New York City can be a daunting place to shop for apparel if you don't know where to go for good deals.  Here's a list of places that YourType's staff has found to have good values.

Store & Location What you can find there

TJMaxx

(found in most major cities, as well as NYC)

6th Avenue @ 18th Street
225th @ Broadway

Men's & Women's, everything from casual to office to cocktail.

Prices range from great to OK.  All merchandise is same or similar quality as you'll find in Major Department Stores, but it is usually overstocks, or slightly off-season.  You have to shop there a lot to find something specific, as stock changes constantly.

Also great for housewares.

Filene's Basement

(found in many major cities, as well as NYC)

6th Ave @ 18th St

Broadway@ 79th St ( next to  1/9 train)

Men's & Women's, especially good for business & business casual.

Prices range from good to OK.  All merchandise is same quality as you'll find in Major Department Stores, but it is usually overstocks.  Great brand names here.

Also great for perfume & accessories.

Daffy's: Clothing Bargains for Millionaires

111 Fifth Avenue
212-529-44776th Avenue @ 34th St (above Toys R Us, next to Macy's)

125 E 57th
212-376-4477

W 57th between Broadway & 8th

335 Madison Av@ 44th St
212-557-4422

Men's & Women's, everything from casual to office to cocktail.

Prices range from great to OK.  All merchandise is same or similar quality as you'll find in Major Department Stores, but it is usually overstocks, or slightly off-season.  You have to shop there a lot to find something specific, as stock changes constantly.

Some Daffy's sell shoes, some don't.

Century 21

World Trade Center area
22 Cortlandt
212-227-9092

Big-time designer names here.  Like a regular department store's couture department, only less expensive.

Dirt-cheap, no.  But if you want top-notch designers for less, start here.
